  • Weddings 2014…the scoop on what’s hot (Part Two)

In part one of this blog, we discussed trends in wedding gowns, flowers, lighting & décor.  In this second part we will be sharing new trends in catering, wedding cake & honeymoons.

The biggest trend in catering for weddings seems to be upscale comfort food, served family style, by waiters.  Think mac & cheese with salami, garlic, peppers & sun-dried tomatoes, or home-style biscuits as sandwich & burger wraps.  Locally sourced everything is the wave of the future as is ice cream as a main dessert, replacing cupcakes & doughnuts.

With the popularity of food trucks throughout the city, brides & grooms are choosing to have multiple trucks service their weddings.  Mary Baird-Wilcock, owner of The Simplifiers Event Planning, cautions that if you are going to use food trucks be sure to hire a planner because each truck comes with its own unique way of doing things & may or may not have everything needed to service a wedding reception or may not even understand what is required of them for such an event.  Lydia Smith, consultant with DNA Events, says that several food trucks now have totally separate catering menus.  DNA has been a leader in promoting the food truck phenomenon for weddings.  They hosted the first Food Truck Expo in Austin at the end of 2012 & will be hosting their second one on April 10th at Lone Oak Barn, a new wedding/event venue in Round Rock. (For more information go to www.dnaeventsaustin.com).

For guests, one of the more anticipated aspects of a reception is the cake.  Today cakes are anything but boring white or ivory stacks.  Fairy dust glitter is being used as are bright, bold colors with textures & patterns.  An extremely new trend is the “naked wedding cake.”  These are typically stacked cakes without icing covering them.  Very unusual & totally Austin!  In wedding cake décor, tall candle toppers are the newest rage.

           Image Image Image

And now for the much anticipated honeymoon.  The honeymoon is the time to relax or unwind after months of decision making, planning & sometimes worrying!  New trends in honeymoons include “glamping” which is glamourous camping- such as the wedding  weekend celebration of local favorite (and Academy Award Winner) Matthew McConaughey to Camilla Alves.  Guests slept in air conditioned tents with luxury bath accommodations but ate around a campfire & enjoyed the natural beauty of the Hill Country.  Adventure honeymoons are on the rise as couples forsake a week or so of idle bliss for more interactive sightseeing such as a safari, bike trips through a foreign country or scuba diving off the Great Barrier Reef.  Private villa rentals are also on the rise.  These combine luxury & style while retaining distinctly local character. (For more information go to www.vrbo.com).

As you plan your wedding , I hope this blog stirs some creative juices in your mind.  There are many talented wedding professionals throughout the United States.  These people are on top of the trends, in fact, many times they start the trends!  If you do not have the time or the desire to personally research all of the talented vendors you will need to create the perfect day, hire an experienced, well-respected event planner to be your guide.  The money you spend on them will save you countless hours, headaches & even money spent with some of the vendors.  If you want recommendations for good planners, just ask an event rental consultant.  We deal with all of the planners in our area & we can certainly steer you in the right direction. • Weddings 2014: The Scoop on What’s HOT!!! (Part One)

From flowers to photography & linens to lighting, event trends come & go rapidly in our fast paced world. The biggest event in most people’s lives is their wedding, so it is natural that they want the most au currant styles & trends.  Austin is home to many educated, computer savvy people who search the internet for the latest trends to make their wedding the talk of the town.

2014 weddings are a definite break from the last several years of shabby chic, neutrals & mason jars tied with raffia.  Let’s start with the RING!!!  Yellow gold is making a comeback as are fancy cut center diamonds & floral details along the side of the ring.  A big, new style is  horizontal setting of the center stone.  This east-west setting makes the stone appear larger than it actually is.

After the ring, the first thing a woman does is look for a wedding gown.  Thanks goodness the years of strapless are over. Only women who hit the gym 5 days a week for years look good in strapless, but that was all that was being offered for the last several years.  Sleeves (sooooooo forgiving!) are making a comeback.  Lace sleeves are really hot.  In fact, lace everywhere is really hot.  Halter tops are also being featured on runways, some with very plunging necklines.  The third silhouette showing a lot of positive interest is the body hugging design.  As far as color, blush is extremely popular both for brides & their bridesmaids.

     Image Image

In event décor, women want to wow their family & friends & this is the time to do it.  According to Ken Sharples, Creative Director for Premiere Party Central, the trend for the overall look of a wedding reception is lavish.  Gold & silver prevail with lots of sequins & sparkle.  Chandeliers are not a new thing, but they are being used in new ways such as groupings of them hanging over dining tables or in outdoor settings.  And according to Katherine McCommon with Intelligent Lighting Design, couples are asking for gold, glitzy & huge chandeliers.  She says gold is the new black.  Gold or silver candelabras, gold rimmed china & dancing to big bands is the style of the moment.  Glitter is everywhere: from invitations, to menus, escort cards & guest books.

            Image Image

Ken says the alternative to metallics are pastels including the use of colored crystal stemware which is being requested regularly.  Pink isn’t just for little girls birthday parties anymore.  Soft shades of the color are showing up in dresses, linens, even wedding cakes.

Undeniably, nothing sets the mood of an event like lighting and in today’s high tech world, the options for lighting are seemingly endless. Katherine says that she is receiving requests from sophisticated couples for café lights, Edison lights, café string lights & tree illuminations.  Lighting is the ultimate design element!

    Image

Mary Baird-Wilcock, owner of The Simplifiers Event Planning, says that she is seeing a new trend in floral design.  The “just picked” look is prevalent in many of the weddings she is planning.  Bouquets are not tightly packed, but loose with lots of height, depth & texture.

    Image Image

Mary also says for Austin couples she is seeing a lot of very sophisticated, but understated, minimalist, posh.  Both Mary & Ken agree that the Austin wedding couples seem to be more educated & have more refined tastes.  They want every element of the event to be cohesive & they don’t leave out any details.

Part Two of this blog will cover trends in wedding food, cakes & honeymoons.  There are some exciting trends in these areas, so stay tuned!

  • Fundraiser

PLEASE SHARE!!! Premiere Party Central & Premiere Tents and Events will be matching donations to the Montoya fundraiser today and tomorrow!

Please read this letter, direct from Delores Crum:

“So many of you have offered assistance and asked how you can help the Montoya family as they prepare to conduct funeral services for their daughter, Gabriela Caprice Montoya. We don’t have the details, but we do know that the family is working with Harrel’s Funeral Home and with St. Anthony’s Catholic church, both in Kyle. You can log on to the Harrel’s web site later today or tomorrow if you plan to attend either the Rosary (tentatively scheduled for Wednesday) or the funeral (tentatively scheduled for Thursday).

Early last week, when Gabi was fighting for life, a close family friend started a giving campaign to help the Montoya’s with medical and other expenses. When Gabi lost her battle, the site changed focus and purpose. Now the Go Fund Me campaign is dedicated to funeral expenses, and funds collected will be used to help offset those costs.
Today I’m writing to ask for your help. For the next 24 hours, Premiere and the Crum family will match, dollar for dollar, every events industry contribution up to $1,500. Our goal is to see “The Honey-Bun Fund” increase by $3,000 before noon tomorrow. We ask that you follow the link at the end of this letter and make your contribution dirctly to the existing fund. If you choose to contribute anonymously, please let me know so that I can add you to the events industry matching total. I will respect your wishes if you choose to remain anonymous.

Thank you to all who have already so generously given, and to those of you who have phoned or written with expressions of willingness to help in so many ways. Carrie and her family, along with the Premiere family, are warmed and touched by your expressions of care and concern. We ask for your continued prayers, thoughts and understanding.

Delores, Richard, Angela, Rick, and the Premiere Family”

  • Hosting a Successful Wedding Open House

Being the “go-to” rental company for many venues, planners, caterers & other wedding professionals in Central Texas, we at Premiere are constantly invited to support and attend open house events.  These are designed primarily for brides & grooms trying to decide where they want to get married and/or host their reception.  Between our nine event consultants & management, we attend some 100 open houses each year.  We see the successful ones & the not so successful ones.  Some venues/businesses consistently have good turnouts for their open houses and this is not due to luck.  Hosting a successful open house requires targeted marketing, smart planning and thoughtful use of lead lists.

    343 warm

Ann Loiselle, Private Events Director at The Hills Country Club in Lakeway, says that statistics show 76% of brides find their venue online. This means that a sharp website, containing excellent photographs and pertinent information is essential. Today’s bride wants to see at a glance whether or not a particular business is a “fit” for her wedding and budget.  Wedding industry advertising dollars should be heavily weighted in favor of an online presence.  In addition to a company’s own site, websites such as theknot.com, weddingwire.com and myweddings.com are common sites brides visit to seek information on resources for their wedding.

    323

Although they go online, brides seem to have a good time attending the major wedding shows  with their friends. In this setting, they can see a number and variety of the vendors at once and ask all the questions they may have.  Generally, bookings are not solidified at shows, but vendors get leads from clients who want to be contacted.  In turn, the brides pick up informational brochures to take home & peruse.  The bridal show “lead list” is sent to every vendor participating in the shows.  These lists are a vital source for vendors to contact potential customers.

    331 warm

Ann Loiselle says that she plans her open houses for a few weeks after a bridal show to capture those brides still looking for a place to marry.  Her most recent open house was a 2 day event over a weekend to accommodate her clients and give them some flexibility on attending.  After culling out brides who aren’t getting married in the area or whose estimated attendance exceeds her venue’s capacity, she prepares a printed invitation. If the prospective event holder has provided a physical address, Ann mails the invitation using software that makes her invitation look personalized.  In the invitation she states that the venue will be set for a “mock” wedding, and that various vendors will be there to discuss their products.  She also includes an RSVP to promote a sense of urgency & exclusivity.  If a bride has filled out a lead card at the wedding shows, Ann sends a very personalized invitation with a handwritten note.  The Friday prior to the open house, she makes phone calls to every show attendee who filled out the leads card.

    301 warm

In addition to all of this advance preparation, the Open House needs to be a “Wow.”  Whether it is in house catering or independent vendors, there needs to be a good selection of food for guests to sample.  Wine is also a plus.  Guests will stay longer & enjoy the atmosphere more if they are “wined and dined.”  The event décor should show the venue in the best possible light. Tables should be set with upscale linens and should show chair, china and other selections  along the budgetary spectrum.

    306

Poor promotion is probably the biggest reason for a poorly attended open house. Utilizing that leads list is extremely important. Although this is a digital world, there is still nothing like personal contact.  Reach out to the most promising prospects and let them know you hope they can attend. Attending a show as a vendor involves a tremendous investment of time, energy and effort, and when there are no guests in attendance it is a big disappointment for all concerned. A show’s goals cannot be fulfilled when the attendance is lacking.

    311

Some “don’ts” that we have observed over the years:  the end of July at an outdoor site is not very appealing.  If you must host in the heat of an oppressive Texas summer, be sure you have air conditioning & that the thermostat is set low enough to keep everyone cool.  An open house is your chance to throw a party.  Think of everything you would provide if you were inviting guests into your home.  Host an event that is fun to attend, comfortable for all concerned & makes guests feel special & welcome. With proper planning, an enticing menu,  the right mix of vendors and prospects, appealing “take-aways” and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, your open house can be a highly successful event for everyone involved !
